Brow Lift Procedure Overview

A brow lift is a cosmetic surgery designed to raise and smooth the forehead, soften wrinkles, and create a fresher, more youthful appearance. Over time, the effects of aging and gravity can cause the brow to droop, making you appear serious, tired, or even angry. A brow lift can restore a more open, relaxed look to your face. While the results are long-lasting, subtle lines and creases may gradually reappear as part of the natural aging process.

What is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that elevates the position of your forehead and eyebrows, helping to smooth wrinkles and restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

As we age, our skin naturally loses elasticity. Sun exposure, the pull of gravity, and the breakdown of collagen can cause the brows to droop, creating deep lines and creases. This may lead to:

  • Vertical “frown lines” between the eyebrows that make you appear stern or angry.
  • Horizontal forehead lines that contribute to an aged look.
  • Sagging of the outer brow, which can make the eyes look tired or sad.

A brow lift addresses these changes by lifting and tightening the skin and underlying tissues, opening up the eye area and softening facial expressions.

Other common terms for a brow lift include:

  • Forehead lift
  • Forehead rejuvenation
  • Browplasty
  • Temporal brow lift (also known as a lateral brow lift)

Types of Brow Lift

Gliding Brow Lift
The Gliding Brow Lift is a minimally invasive technique designed to gently lift and reshape the eyebrows for a refreshed, youthful look. Instead of removing excess skin, this method repositions the underlying tissue layers, resulting in a smoother contour and faster recovery. Small incisions are placed discreetly within the hairline, allowing the brows to “glide” into their new position with minimal visible scarring. It’s ideal for those seeking subtle enhancement and natural-looking results with reduced downtime, although it is important to note that a surgical (haemostatic) net will be used for 2-3 days to fix the brow in its new position.

Lateral Brow Lift (Temple Lift)
A Lateral Brow Lift, also known as a Temple Lift, focuses on elevating the outer portion of the eyebrows and rejuvenating the upper face. This approach targets sagging in the outer brows and temple area, helping to open up the eyes and soften fine lines such as crow’s feet. Small, hidden incisions are made near the temples within the hairline, enabling subtle yet noticeable lifting with minimal scarring. The result is a brighter, more youthful eye area and smoother outer forehead.

Direct Brow Lift
The Direct Brow Lift is a precise surgical method that removes a small section of skin directly above the eyebrows to achieve targeted elevation and reshaping. Unlike other techniques, it does not rely on hairline incisions, making it particularly effective for correcting significant drooping or addressing asymmetry. This method allows for highly accurate adjustments but may leave a fine scar above the brow, which is more visible than with other brow lift techniques.

What Does a Brow Lift Do?

A brow lift helps to rejuvenate the upper face by addressing:

  • Horizontal forehead lines – smooths creases across the forehead and on the bridge of the nose.
  • Vertical frown lines (“11s”) – softens the deep lines between the eyebrows for a more relaxed expression.
  • Sagging or drooping brows – lifts hooded brows to open up the eyes, creating a more youthful and alert appearance.

Will a Brow Lift Change My Eye Shape?

No — a brow lift will not alter the shape of your eyes or remove under-eye bags. Its effects are focused on lifting and reshaping the eyebrows and smoothing the forehead, enhancing the overall look of the upper face without changing your natural eye structure.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Brow Lift?

You may be suitable for a brow lift if you:

  • Are in good overall health.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Have realistic expectations about the results.

During your consultation, your healthcare provider will review your full medical history, examine your facial structure, and discuss your aesthetic goals to determine whether a brow lift is the right option for you.

Can a Brow Lift Be Combined with Other Cosmetic Procedures?

Yes — a brow lift can be performed alongside other cosmetic treatments to enhance overall results and reduce total recovery time. Common procedures that may be combined with a brow lift include:

  • Facelift
  • Mini facelift
  • Neck lift
  • Skin resurfacing
  • Upper or lower eyelid surgery

Treatment Details

Before Your Brow Lift
In preparation for your brow lift, your healthcare provider will:

  • Assess your forehead area.
  • Ask you to make various facial expressions to evaluate wrinkles and lines.
  • Discuss the different brow lift techniques suited to your goals.
  • Review your overall health and medical history.
  • Take photographs of your forehead and brows for reference.
  • Explain the expected results, potential risks, and possible complications.

Questions to Ask Your Provider
Your consultation is the perfect time to gather all the information you need to feel confident about your procedure. You might ask:

  • How can I achieve the best possible results?
  • Which technique will you use for my surgery?
  • What is the expected recovery time?
  • What are the risks involved?
  • How will my results look in 1, 5, and 10 years?
  • What options are available if I’m unhappy with the outcome?
  • Where will the scars be located?

Preparing for Surgery
Your surgeon will provide personalised preoperative instructions, which may include:

  • Stop smoking at least six weeks before surgery.
  • Limit alcohol intake.
  • Avoid certain medications, such as aspirin.
  • Grow your hair slightly to help conceal any scars.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.
  • Have a friend or family member stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Outpatient Procedure
A brow lift is typically performed as an outpatient surgery, meaning you can return home the same day without an overnight hospital stay.

What Happens During a Brow Lift Procedure?

During your brow lift, you’ll be given local anesthesia/general anesthesia depending on whether procedures are combined, to ensure you remain comfortable and pain-free.

Once the anesthesia takes effect, your surgeon will make precise incisions—usually hidden along the hairline. They will then lift and reposition the underlying tissues, and may remove small sections of muscle and skin that contribute to wrinkles or deep frown lines.

After the adjustments are complete, the incisions will be carefully closed with stitches or staples, and the area will be gently padded and bandaged to protect the surgical site.

The entire procedure typically takes one to three hours, depending on the method used and the extent of the lift.

Brow Lift Surgery Recovery & Aftercare

Following your brow lift, you’ll be given detailed instructions to support healing and ensure the best possible results.

Instructions on Discharge

  • On the day of discharge, your hair will be gently washed. You can resume normal hair washing after this.
  • Apply antiseptic ointment to the scalp scars twice daily for around 2 weeks.
  • Use an ice compress over the eyes for the first 2 days to help reduce swelling.
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated on a few pillows for the first 2 weeks and avoid bending your head down.
  • Wear TED compression stockings for 2 weeks to help with circulation.
  • You will be discharged with standard pain relief medication.

Dressings Clinic

  • Around 1 week post-surgery – a follow-up to check your wounds.
  • Around 2 weeks post-surgery – removal of metal clips in the scalp.

Activities

  • No major restrictions, but avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for the first 2 weeks.

Scar Care (First 3 Months)

  • Moisturise all scars daily for at least 3 months to promote healing and minimise their appearance.

If you experience any problems, unusual symptoms, or have concerns at any point during recovery, contact your surgical team immediately.
