Microneedling For Surgical Scars

Scarring after surgery, or as a result of injury or acne, can make you feel self-conscious about your skin's appearance. SkinPen Microneedling is an FDA approved microneedling treatment which is proven to reduce the appearance of traumatic or surgical scars and acne scars. We also offer SkinPen in conjunction with revolutionary PRP treatment to further boost skin repair results.

How does microneedling reduce scars?

Scarring occurs when the deeper layers of your skin are damaged by trauma, surgery or acne. During the wound-healing process, your body will rapidly try to repair and heal the wound, producing lower quality collagen fibres than are found in healthy skin. This means that the quality and structure of the new skin is different, leaving you with a scar once your body has finished healing.

SkinPen Precision (Microneedling) creates controlled micro injuries that stimulate the body€™s natural wound healing response which initiates the release of natural growth factors to improve collagen formation and cellular tissue. SkinPen Precision can effectively remodel scar tissue whilst maintaining the overall structure of the skin. SkinPen can be used on all areas of the face and body and can treat a number of concerns.

There are three phases involved in the wound-healing process:

Phase I  (Inflammation phase) €“ The piercing of the skin triggers a response in your immune system which disinfects the wounds, increases blood flow and initiates new tissue formation.

Phase II (Proliferation phase) €“ A new network of blood vessels develop in addition to wound rebuilding involving new granulation cells.

Phase III (Remodelling phase) €“ The wound is replaced with new blood vessels and Dermal tissues.

What types of scars can SkinPen microneedling help with?

SkinPen microneedling is the only FDA approved micro-needling device which can reduce most scars on the body and face, including:

  • Surgical scars
  • Traumatic scars
  • Acne scars
  • Self-harm scars
  • Hypertrophic scars (raised white scars)
  • Stretch marks
  • Sunken scars

Scars need to have fully healed before performing microneedling treatment. Keloid scars also cannot be treated. Keloid scars occur when scar tissue grows outside of the wound site. These are often red or purple in colour.

What does microneedling feel like?

SkinPen microneedling is virtually pain-free, but you may experience some minor discomfort. Prior to treatment, the target area will be cleaned, and a topical anaesthetic cream will be applied to reduce any discomfort.

What can I expect after my treatment?

Your skin may look red and feel slightly warm, like light sunburn. Redness will reduce over the next few days, but the scars may continue to remain red whilst in the early stages of recovery. Your therapist will provide comprehensive aftercare instructions so you will heal as quickly as possible.

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure, with almost no downtime. Patients can usually return to work the next day.

SkinPen is proven to cause significant results even after a single treatment, but we typically recommend a course of 3 treatments, 4 weeks apart, for the maximum results. The skin takes time to heal fully, so the final result may take around 3-6 months after your last treatment. The results are long lasting, and after your course is complete, you should not require any further treatment. However, if the skin is damaged after the treatment, you may require maintenance treatments to maintain your result.

How much does SkinPen microneedling cost?

SkinPen costs £250 for a single session, or £700 for a course of 3. For enhanced results, SkinPen + PRP costs £360 for a single session, or £900 for a course of 3.
